Drug Charges Archives

Florida advocacy group fights to legalize medical marijuana

The rise of legalization of medical marijuana is a hot topic across the country. Many states have introduced legislation under which patients can use the drug to help with cancer, glaucoma, ALS, Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, PTSD, epilepsy, and HIV/AIDS. Although we often rely on traditional prescription drugs, some believe that marijuana has been shown to ease the symptoms of many health issues.

Medical marijuana: Ending conflict between state and federal laws

We recently discussed proposed legislation that would make Florida one of several states that have legalized medical use of marijuana. Since that post, Congress has made a bold move that removes at least one conflict in the enforcement of federal drug offenses in states where pot use is legal.

Study shows a disparity in marijuana arrests based on race

A recent study taken in the greater Tampa area shows black individuals are arrested for marijuana possession much more often than white and Hispanic individuals. The study also shows that the arrest rate for black people in these local counties is nearly double that of the national average.

What are Florida penalties for illegal drug possession and sale?

While most everyone is likely aware that certain drugs are illegal, many people continue to defy the law by using, selling or trafficking controlled substances or prescription medications. If you are accused of drug possession, distribution, manufacturing or trafficking, it may be difficult to develop a defense for trial on your own. Repeat offenders also often face harsher penalties.

A look at Florida's medical marijuana proposal

Everything surrounding how medical marijuana is prescribed and used in Florida could be changing in November. While 23 states have already legalized medical marijuana in some form or fashion, Florida is possibly on the verge of becoming the 24th state. Whether these regulations will be beneficial or not is left to be seen, but it will assuredly affect marijuana drug charges if passed.

Synthetic marijuana still illegal to purchase in Florida

The development of new synthetic "designer" drugs intended to mimic the hallucinogenic effects of marijuana is taking on an increasingly cat-and-mouse quality between manufacturers of synthetic marijuana and law enforcement in Florida. Purchasers of the drug, which is known by the street names of "spice" and "K2," may be unaware that it is illegal to do so.

Several arrested in alleged drug ring in Florida

A recent anti-drug operation has resulted in five arrests in Florida, as well as the issuance of arrest warrants for five more individuals. The arrests and warrants are the culmination of an investigation that took months, during which personnel of the DEA used wiretaps and confidential sources to gather information and evidence against the accused suspects.
