How common is drunk driving?

On Behalf of | Sep 8, 2017 | Drunk Driving

Summer is nearly over and Labor Day is here. Many Americans, including many from Tampa

Bay, Florida, and the surrounding area like to celebrate by going on a vacation or even staying home and hosting a party or barbecue. Inevitably, this means that many will also enjoy a few alcoholic beverages during their time off from work. Unfortunately, this often means an increase in people on the roads drinking and driving.

According to the Center for Disease Control, nearly 1.1 million drivers were arrested for driving under the influence in 2015. This clearly represents a huge number of incidents, but is only just 1 percent of the 111 million self-reported cases of driving while impaired by adults in the United States each year.

The decision to get behind the wheel after too many drinks can lead to very serious consequences. First, if you are caught driving under the influence, you will be hit with substantial and costly penalties. These penalties, depending upon the severity of your crime, could include not only a license revocation but the installation of an ignition interlock device, fines and even time in prison. If you are involved in a fatal motor vehicle accident while driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you may also be charged with manslaughter.

If you find yourself facing drunk driving charges, it is important to take these charges very seriously. It would be wise to speak with a lawyer familiar with criminal law and drunk driving to discuss your rights and options. Having a strong representation in court could make a substantial difference in your life and your future.
